So, you have spoken to a therapist and began treatment for PTSD. While it would be wonderful to meet with them every time you have symptoms and manage them with your therapist, that is not feasible time or money wise. Today, I am going to talk about 4 common ways that you can cope with your PTSD symptoms in your everyday life.

Tools for the Toolbelt

While there are many ways to cope with negative mental health symptoms there are 4 that I have found to be most helpful in my clients’ as well as my own life.

Mindfulness Meditation and YogaI know, I know, practicing yoga and meditation is not for everyone. It is also largely considered to be less “manly” by men. However, studies have shown that practicing these exercises can reduce the anxiety, depression and restlessness associated with PTSD. This allows us to function better because we are more rested and have more clarity of mind.

Deep Breathing and Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) Deep breathing, or as I like to call it “taking cookie breaths”, is when you control your breathing and slowly inhale and exhale. This can reduce your heart rate and help you to relax. PMR is when you systematically tense and relax specific muscle groups in your body. This technique allows you to reduce anxiety and become more aware of tension in your own body and releasing it, promoting calm and relaxation.

Self-Soothing or Self-CareThese are my “bread and butter” so to speak. I promote these activities often to my clients. Do activities that bring you relaxation and peace. Reading a book, doing a hobby such a cooking or crafting; any activity that allows you to relax and bring you happiness and peace are awesome ways to reduce PTSD symptoms.

Establishing a RoutineThis is something that is extremely difficult to do in the “hustle and bustle” of today. By creating a structured routine for yourself, you take control of your life and create a sense of normalcy. This can alleviate the feeling of losing control in a PTSD episode.

Final Thoughts

There are many different coping strategies to combat the symptoms of PTSD as well as other mental health symptoms. While this list is a good starting point, it is important for you to find what works for you. If you or someone you know needs help with managing PTSD or other mental health symptoms, reach out…
