Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness

There are a few holidays in the month of June that have a significant impact on our mental health. I talked about one such holiday on Monday, you can find that here. Today I will be talking about Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias that many struggle with.

So, What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms eventually grow severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. (Alzheimer’s Association). It is also the most common cause of dementia and accounts for 60 – 80 percent of dementia cases. Symptoms of this disease include:

  • Remembering newly learned information

  • Confusion

  • Disorientation

  • Mood and behavior changes

  • Deepening confusion about events, time and place

  • Unfounded suspicions about family, friends and professional caregivers

  • Difficulty speaking, swallowing and walking

It is important to note that Alzheimer’s disease IS NOT a normal part of aging. While there are treatments available that slow the worsening of symptoms, it has no cure.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy can help individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers in the following ways:

  • Identifying and understanding trauma-related behaviors

  • Developing coping skills

  • Reducing triggers and promoting safety

  • Utilizing specific therapies (CBT, TFCBT)

  • Promoting resilience and well-being
